The Jardin d'Acclimatation in Paris
The history of the place
An English garden in the French style… When the Jardin d’Acclimatation was inaugurated by Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie on 6 October 1860, the Bois de Boulogne had already been undergoing a major upheaval for ten years. The visionary Emperor had the ambition to have a landscaped park laid out around the entire perimeter, designed according to the model of English gardens.
It was in this context of "remodeling" on the outskirts of the capital that the Jardin Zoologique d'Acclimatation was created, after fifteen months of work. Inaugurated in the presence of personalities such as Hector Berlioz, Alexandre Dumas, Prospère Mérimée and Théophile Gautier, the Garden aroused the fervor of the public from its opening on October 9, 1860. All levels of society flocked to the Jardin d'Acclimatation to marvel at the giraffes, zebras, kangaroos, cheetahs and antelopes.
